On 10 April 2014, Francesco Militello Mirto has realized this photo during a training mission with the 5th Group of the Italian Navy.
The French-Italian FREMM cooperation programme envisages, for Italy, the construction of ten European Multi-Mission Frigates (6 General Purpose version – characterised by enhanced flexibility of use – and 4 ASW variants, for more specialised operational deployment). Deliveries have been scheduled for a seven-year period from 2013 to 2019, at an average rate of one unit per year. Both variants feature excellent anti-air and anti-surface capabilities, and may be equipped with SH-90/EH101 helicopters. The ASW variant are fitted with towed sonar and torpedo launchers. The new frigates will replace older Maestrale- and Soldato-class vessels.
