The psychological implications of expatriation and contemporary migration were the focus of an event hosted at the Italian Embassy in Madrid, held for the Italian community living in Spain. The meeting, promoted by Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi together with First Political and Consular Counsellor Marco Lapadura, was based on the book “Traiettorie. Guida psicologica all’espatrio”, written by psychologist Anna Pisterzi in collaboration with the Transiti cooperative, represented by its director Lorenzo Lener. The book stems from a research project launched in 2017 on the emotional and relational challenges faced by Italians abroad, as well as the use of online psychotherapy as a support tool. The discussion addressed key aspects of the expatriation experience, including family relationships, preparation for departure, feelings of guilt, nostalgia, adaptation processes and social and cultural integration in host countries. The Comites Madrid also took part in the event. The debate highlighted how contemporary Italian migration is driven not only by economic necessity, but also by the search for professional opportunities, personal growth and international experiences. According to the speakers, the expatriation experience continues to involve psychological challenges that are often underestimated, frequently compounded by an idealised representation of life abroad and by a lack of adequate services supporting the mental well-being of Italian communities overseas. The discussion also examined the impact of new technologies on migration dynamics. Constant connectivity with the country of origin reduces emotional detachment compared to previous generations, but it can also slow down linguistic, social and cultural integration in host societies.
